Dress Code

At Evanston Heights School we recognize that dress can play an important role in the development of a student's identity and believe that students have both the right to express themselves and the shared responsibility to maintain a respectful, safe and positive school and learning environment.

Our dress code at school adheres to Administrative Regulation 6010 which encourages:

  • cleanliness, neatness, and generally positive attitudes
  • appropriateness for the particular activity
  • safety in all activities

The following dress code guidelines reflect a shared vision for appropriate dress at Evanston Heights School.

  • Students must arrive to school in appropriate dress that supports learning effectively in all scheduled classes and activities.
  • Hats and hoods are permitted if eyes remain visible.
  • Clothing that advertises the use of drugs, alcohol, violence, makes sexual inferences or innuendos, has inappropriate language, or dehumanizes any specific person/identity or group, is unacceptable. Articles of clothing that indicate gang affiliation are also unacceptable at school.
  • Visibility of undergarments or areas of the body generally covered by undergarments, is deemed unacceptable in all school activities.  The only exception to this is shoulder straps from undergarments, which are permitted.
  • Midsections (area from ribs to hips) must be covered while standing. Shirts must meet the top of the pants/shorts/skirt at a minimum.

School administration reserves the right to request that any student who is considered to be inappropriately dressed for school to change into something appropriate, such as their gym strip, or to return home and change before returning to their classroom.

Dress for Weather Conditions

Whether your child is bused, walks to school or is driven, Calgary’s unpredictable weather can see the temperature and weather conditions change drastically in a very short time. Please ensure your children are dressed appropriately to be outside every day whether it is cold, snowy, rainy or sunny.

Dress for Safety

Students at Evanston Heights School are encouraged, but not required to change for Physical Education classes. All students are welcomed into the phys ed spaces regardless of their attire.

Appropriate footwear is required for all students (no slides, no Crocs, no flip flops, no heels) for participation in physical activities.

Students enrolled in Construction / Foods classes are expected to adhere to course requirements for safety (closed toe shoes, hair pulled back, etc.)
